COVID-19 hit Oklahoma particularly hard in the second half of June, as the state reported several days of record-setting case increases. On June 30, responding to the alarming trend, Governor Kevin Stitt encouraged all of the state’s residents to wear face masks.

The governor, who put on a mask himself while making the announcement, had previously donned a mask in public only once. While confirming he will not issue a mandatory order, he asked that Oklahoma residents consider the safety of those most vulnerable to the novel coronavirus by wearing a mask whenever social distancing was not possible.

The governor’s announcement came on the same day that the Oklahoma State Department of Health reported 585 new cases in the state and two days before it reported an additional 427. Dr. Dale Bratzler, the chief COVID officer at the University of Oklahoma, warned on July 2 that Oklahoma is in the midst of exponential community spread.
