the Doe of the Dawn
אילת השחר
The strengthening power of the day's dawn
Israel is called “a lovely doe” (Proverbs 5:19). At the same time the word doe אילת denotes strength and salvation. שחר Shachar is the time of day's dawn. Its strengthening power is a time of “searching” in which objects, though not yet clearly distinguishable from one another, can already be recognized if an effort is made to search for them. It is the promising dawn which sends forth the first rays of sunlight heralding a new day for the future of Israel (Rashi's commentary on Psalms 22.:1) The way of the righteous is like the light of dawn; it shines ever brighter until the day is perfect (Proverbs 4:18)
