Dr. Grace Walker Gray's profile

Naturopathy for Low Back Pain

With a BS from the University of British Columbia and a Doctorate in both physical therapy and occupational therapy from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in Utah, Grace Walker is a physical therapist and the managing director at Walker Physical Therapy & Pain Center in California. She has always been dedicated to enhancing her education as a physical therapist and has expanded her range of therapeutics to include certificates in holistic health care practitioner, nutrition, herbology, and aromatherapy. Today, Grace Walker is working on certification as a naturopathic practitioner from the National Healing Institute of Naturopathy.

Recently, the American Pain Society reported on current reviews of the effectiveness of invasive techniques such as surgery for chronic low back pain, and concluded that the risks were often higher than the rewards. Alternative treatments such as those provided by a naturopath may prove to be both safer and more effective than surgery for chronic low back pain.

Naturopaths are generally trained in a number of different therapeutic specialties including nutrition, acupuncture, or aromatherapy. These practitioners can observe the patient from a holistic perspective and offer individualized treatments to try to determine the cause of the issue and return the patient to health and wellness. Because chronic low back pain may be caused by stress and lifestyle factors, it may be more effective to address, for example, weight loss or sleeping issues, rather than simply treating the symptoms with invasive procedures that may have negative consequences.
