El-Hibri Charitable Foundation

On July 17, 2013, in Washington D.C., the El-Hibri Charitable Foundation hosted the Third Annual Ibrahim El-Hibri Interfaith Iftar dinner. Taking place on a day of Jewish and Muslim fasting and marking the eighth day of Ramadan, the event featured an address delivered by His Eminence Theodore Cardinal McCarrick. Fuad El-Hibri, the chairman of the foundation’s board of trustees, attended the dinner. According to Fuad El-Hibri, His Eminence spoke of the challenges and importance of building interfaith connections.

Cardinal McCarrick served as the Archbishop Emeritus of Washington from 2001 to 2006. He used this position to address the challenges of religious communities living up to their ideals. The main thesis of the keynote address focused on ushering in a new age of interfaith cooperation based on love and not fear. More than half the people in the world are Christian or Muslim, and the Cardinal has observed the negative global repercussions that occur when the two religions do not understand one another. He stated that the key to mutual understanding is talking "with" members of the other religion rather than "to" them.
