Rodan Kane Hart "Pattern Language"

Rodan Kane Hart Pattern Language
2013
The show's title, Pattern Language, is taken from Christopher Alexander's book A Pattern Language. In his book Alexander suggests the possibility to create useable, functioning architecture through the use of certain patterns which would create solutions to basic architectural problems. By using these patterns an architectural language is created.

The poster references the creation of a design language through the use of graphic solutions proposed by modernist designers, the use of a strict modular grid, a clear hierarchy and a simple, contemporary sans-serif typeface all contribute to an aesthetically modern solution to communication. The poster also references the literal idea of a pattern of language through the use of repetition of typographic elements. Type is legible because of the recognition of certain positive and negative shapes, the letters and the matrix which holds these letters in place. By combining certain letters we create a recognizable pattern or word. By combining these words into structured sentences along with punctuation and correct grammar we create a second recognizable pattern, and so on. I've simplified this idea by literally repeating key information, the artist's name, the show's title and the date. The resulting pattern has been cropped tightly to only reveal a snippet of this pattern, hinting at it's existence, but not revealing it outright.

The very geometric typeface chosen and the choice of black type on a stark white background are visual references to Hart's sculptural work and the clean setting of the gallery space.

On the reverse of the poster is an infographic based on a diagram by Hart in which he explores and links key words which inform his art.
