Killer Joe Official Alternative Movie Posters
Concept, illustration & design
In support of William Friedkin's cult classic film "Killer Joe", a competition was launched by the production company (LD Entertainment) and supporting marketing agency (BOND), to design an alternate one-sheet poster, to be judged by the filmmakers. After viewing the trailer, I created an illustrated poster of the titular character (played by Matthew McConaughey), that I felt captured the mood of the film. The style was inspired by illustrated film posters of the 70s/80s, in particular Polish-language versions of Hollywood posters.

Upon submission, the feedback to my poster was overwhelmingly positive, and following my entry the filmmakers and supporting agency commissioned me to produce a further 4 portraits featuring the lead characters from the film.
In each poster I used colour to visualise the essence of the 4 main characters (clockwise from top: Ansel, Chris, Dottie and Sharla), and depict a scene which best represented each of them. The title type was hand-drawn, and the gory styling was inspired by the visceral, psychological horror within the film.

The poster has since featured as the cover of Belgium publication Focus Vif and was nominated as "Alternate Poster Of The Year" by leading U.K. publication Shortlist Magazine, both online and offline. It has also been featured in the AMP Volume 1 book.
Client feedback

"Working with Greg to create character one-sheets for William Friedkin's "Killer Joe", he brought a voice, aesthetic and creativity to the project that couldn't have been more perfect. His work was beautiful, striking and above all else, loved by the audience."
