Equal employment opportunity (EEO) regulations affect everyone in the working world, from job seekers to employers. Yet, many people are unclear about what this protection means.

In essence, EEO means that employers must treat everyone fairly when making decisions relating to employment. This includes termination, hiring, compensation, and promotion. When making these decisions, employers must give everyone the same chance of succeeding if they have the skills and capabilities for the role they are seeking.

These decisions cannot be based on certain protected characteristics, such as race, age, religion, and sex. Under EEO laws, a job candidate cannot be rejected simply because they are Christian or African. Rather the rejection must be due to them lacking the qualifications necessary for the job they are applying for. Similarly, companies cannot choose to promote existing employees based solely on their sex.

While these characteristics are protected by EEO, it does not mean that underrepresented groups are hired more by these employers. If people of these groups do not apply for a particular job, then companies are not required to individually seek them out for a job opening.
