Ancient meets Modern

The idea of this project was to blend the ancient culture of the Zapotec people with a modern day object, in this case, a cheeseburger.
I chose to produce a stone slab similar to those found in building J at the site of Monte Albán, Mexico, creating symbols to match and blend with existing glyphs.
The slab tells a fictitious story of how to prepare an offering for a ritual performed in honour of the God of Corn – Cozobi. The diety or priest would sacrifice a deer then grind down the meat to make a type of patty which would be cooked and placed between a corn bun with cheese (made from deer’s milk). This would then be offered to appease Cozobi, who in return would send the Zapotec people an abundant harvest of corn.
The stone slab stands 900mm high and is housed in a wooden crate with appropriate stenciling, to replicate an archaeological ‘find’.
I had so much fun designing, creating and making this project.
