Oakley for D&AD. Transformable Outwear

Urban commuters in London who cycle are more and more, ranging from workers to students or ordinary people. It is important to be able to ride comfortably on the bike, in safety as well. Hundreds and hundreds of technical jackets filled with reflective material can be found in shops, but all of them have quite a geeky aesthetic. What about the worker who enters his office with one of those on? He would definetly look silly. The alternative would be to bring a jacket to change for when not riding the bike.. but this would cause excess baggage.

The solution is this design of Transformable Outwear. Coated in wax cotton, for waterproof necessities, the jacket appears to be a regular, Barbour cut style coat. However there are many secret parts to it. The collars, pockets and sleeves turn out to reveal reflective material, so that when the user (in this case, the cyclist) rides the bike he can do it in complete safety. The jacket opens with zips in the under-arms and the back, to improve air circulation and create a comfortable ride. Once off the bike, the pockets, collars, sleeves and zips can be quickly turned back to their original state, creating the illusion of wearing a normal, elegant and stylish jacket for everyday jobs.
