More With Less - Freshly Squeezed

Nowadays it is essential to think about what materials we can use to create our designs. Resources are scarce and people, especially designers, have to re-invent the use of materials or find new ways of creating with them. This is what is meant by “More with Less”: trying to make more, using less material and making less impact for the environment.

Everyday we throw away hundreds and hundreds of paper rolls, card, newspaper, but a big component of this waste is food. Peels, shells, cut-offs… I have decided to use wasted orange peels and use their aromatic properties to create a fruit bowl which enhances the user’s experience, both sensorially, aesthetically and aromatically. The bowl naturally releases a very strong but pleasant orange aroma, which scents every room which it is placed in.

Due to the large amount of oranges being squeezed by orange juice producers in the world, I have only used squeezed orange peels which have been dried and crushed into powder, and bonded with a completely bio, natural gluing compost (made of rice flour, water, xantham gum and glycerine).

The bowl is coated with shellac, a natural resin, which makes it completely waterproof and can be hand-washed.
