In taking snapshots of abstracted elements of a building or urban space, I believe that one can begin to tell a story of a house or an environment. Familiar domestic objects employed in still life painting provide a portal for interpretation, an analogous link from one person’s memory to another. By playing on the familiarity of a subject, an observer will inadvertently ally certain emotions to it. When such experiences are strung together the observer can transcend time and connect with a sense of place.
The attached series, Gulland, is set around our family holiday home in Cornwall which holds many rich childhood memories. Although I do not expect an observer to relate directly to my impressions, I do hope to reignite a distant memory of a cottage.
