Leather in Basketry

Leather in Basketry is a structural and tactile investigation into leather. The ancient process of
boiling leather is married with the traditional Indonesian craft of weaving baskets, resulting in an
object that showcases leather as a material.

This marriage of crafts is coupled with the aid of a laser cutter, allowing accurate cuts on the
leather to be made. During the process of boiling, the leather hardens and shrinks, tightening the
cross-weaves of leather strips that make up the structure of the basket archetype. The structural
integrity is further reinforced by the incorporation of brass tubes resulting in an object that
comprises of both an eclectic mix of materials as well as a construction that features traditional
and modern processes.
