The Wind In The Willows Book Cover

Competition brief set by Puffin to design a new cover for The Wind In The Willows.

Upon reading the brief, I instantly had lots of ideas as to how I could tackle it. For example, I understood the importance of creating a cover which needs to appeal to children and also adults (who may wish to purchase the book for their children, but also would not be embarrassed of reading it themselves). I therefore aimed to create a bright bold cover which would stand out against the rest in bookstores.

I decided to go against the obvious of using the characters and instead took inspiration from the beautiful King Penguin book covers from the 1930-50s and used my passion for vintage, and love for repeating and geometric patterns.

My final cover contained a repeating toad pattern, which I also created geometrically. I also used a vintage type face, which fits the book’s heritage, but also gives it a unique look. The vibrant colours, and illustrated toad pattern, give it a style which appeals to both children and adults.
