Modular Architecture
CONCEPT DESING

An ecological and modular architecture to unable people thinking the space of intimacy and social life.

THE CONTEXT
In 2015 I took part, with two architects and one product designer, in a contest to design a modular architecture to be used for homeless people housing schemes. The specifications required the architecture to be environmentally friendly, fast to build, and economical.

THE CHALLENGE
How to design a house for someone who, in the worst case, has spent many years on the street? Although there is a community aspect to street life, it’s nothing easy to go from potentially years of social exclusion of having to respond to the expectations of neighborhood life. This project was a great opportunity to question ourselves about collective life and about the articulation between social life and intimacy.

THE SOLUTION
I came out with an architectural concept composed of cone-shaped cell-modules. Connected to each other they would offer many possibilities of complex shapes, each of them allowing a different approach to social life. My teammates made the concept technically functional and together we came out with an architectural project, allowing flexibility between individual life and social coexistence.

THE PURPOSE
I believe a project find its sense when users can take it over and make it their own. The result might not always please the designer, but this is when the project really starts existing and takes an active part in a society. As a designer, I’m interested in building tools allowing people to decide for themselves the way they want to live.
