The Fun in Garamond

This is a first year project, for it we were required to pick a typeface and create a Font Flag and Specimen Sheet portraying its history and characteristics. I’ve picked Garamond, in specific Adobe Garamond Pro. Garamond is normally connoted with serious, formal and academic texts. In contrast, my Font Flag and Specimen Sheet depict Garamond’s less formal fun attributes. I was inspired by the fact that Garamond is used in children’s books. Dr Seuss’ works stand out, using Garamond in various ways, with text not being aligned formally and round lowercase letters. I’ve used quotes from Dr Seuss’ work and bright primary colours to evoke a fun childlike theme. However, it also retains a modern design and white negative space, making it light and open.
The Font Flag is Dr Seuss’ quote “Think and Wonder-Wonder and Think” in Adobe Garamond Bold coloured red and blue in lowercase and “Think” in the regular type family coloured grey looking more formal. Making a subliminal message to the viewers to keep an open mind about their views of Garamond with the “Wonder” containing round letterforms and bright colours in contrast with the grey “Think”. The Specimen Sheet continues almost like its spiral is emerging from the two “r”s like the mouth of a creature from Dr Seuss’ illustrations. The spiral itself highlights how Garamond’s serifs guide the eye, using the uppercase serif drawing the viewer. My target audience is young adults between 25 and 35, they would appreciate the modern fun look and feel nostalgic seeing the familiar font used in literary works from their childhood.
