An Icon for Jozi
Our project was a design jam that ran with a guest lecturer for two weeks as a creative exercise to practice out of the box thinking for icon generation. The brief required us to create an icon representative of Johannesburg in a way it hasn't been seen before. To do so we brainstormed words, ideas and concepts generally associated with Johannesburg and abstract concepts and narratives we associated personally. Then found icons and images to represent both of them to mix and match those icons together to create a unique new icon to represent the city. My general associations were of friendship, culture, music, and architecture, while my metaphorical associations were of freedom in different forms. The final three icons represented the unique architecture in Johannesburg's skyline and the unique scarf that Xhosa women wear as well as music, dreaming and freedom imagery. The final icons are not technically accurate enough to represent the city as a whole. However, that's not their purpose they're meant to be a creative exploration of Johannesburg and iconography.
