(Un)Framed Volumes
Set design for a dance performance
For the opening of a new extension of the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam a dance performance was organised. Visitors could walk from the main entrance in the old building to the new extension. During their walk their were surrounded by dances evoking an interesting perspective a on the architecture. Together with Menno Trautwein and Lisanne Hakkers i made a set design for the smallest part of the route, right at the point were visitors enter the new extension.

Frames
We made a series of six man-sized frames covered with black stretch fabric. The frames are movable in all directions. The fabric can be transparent or not, due to the light. Each frame offered a place for one dancer. While moving, the dancers manipulate both space, their own volume and their own visibility. Key figure was another dancer who danced in the space which was left.

Dialogue
The aim was to make a performance in which the design, the dance and the new building were in dialogue. It was essential those three factors would not compete. During the design proces our design became less complicated. It was surprising how much the dances could do with very simple things.

Critical details
The setting might look very simple, but while making the frames every details appeared to be important. We tried to make the frames as minimal as possible, because every extra construction part would become visible.
