Study Assignment
Making a fashion school can be very complicated. A fashion school is not just a facility offering classrooms. It's a place to work. It's a place to be inspired. It's a place to become a professional. It's a stage for new talents. It's a places where different disciplines can be bundled. Because the school consists of so many elements, with all their own requirements it's not enough to just give them their own room. That's why i approached the school as a community of autonomous parts. Parts who should have their own address, from which they can operate independently. But also part which become more when they are together.
Made by AMFI. Inspired by urban life.

The assignment was to make a design for a fashion school on a abandoned, but well located, site in Amsterdam. The fact this site is located in the center created the opportunity the relate the school with urban life. Visitors can see the creations of students and buy clothes from a student run label. Students have the opportunity to show their work and get professional experience by starting their own company within the school building.
Woven into the urban fabric

To pull the urban life into the plot, most of the site is left open to become a public square. The square is surrounded by towers, who appear to be an ensemble of individual objects. The parts of the school who needs the most exposure, are situated in the towers directly at the square. Some other towers, containing a library and student housing units, are placed further away from the street, weaving the school deep into the urban fabric.
Making fashion is a mystery

In contrast to all the exposure the towers have, the design work itself remains a mystery. That's why the most important part of the school is hidden for public: the workshop. The workshop is a big underground space, stretching from the street to even to the other side of the water. This is where all students work, regardless their study or experience level. Because of this space the school becomes a creative melting pot where the different parts of the school complement each other.
A community of autonomous parts

While in the workshop everyone can inspire each other, each individual part of the school has it's own home base to focus on their own discipline. Each tower is assigned to a specific discipline (design, management and branding) or function (library, housing, bar and shop). Each tower has a base in the workshop, making it very easy to find everything the school has to offer. The school as a community of autonomous parts.
