Study Shows Age Not a Factor in Epilepsy Drug Efficacy

An experienced pediatric neurologist, Dr. Yasser Awaad has spent more than 30 years in the field, both as a physician and educator. In addition to his work as a consultant at Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, Dr. Yasser Awaad maintains an active membership in the American Academy of Neurology (AAN).

A recent comprehensive study conducted by the AAN shows that drugs used to treat epileptic adults should have similar beneficial outcomes for pediatric patients. This significant announcement is the culmination of trials over a 45-year period.

One of the major hurdles in developing new drug treatments for epileptic children is the lapse in time for a drug to be approved for pediatric use after it has been approved for adult use. These approvals usually take longer because conducting clinical trials with pediatric patients is more difficult.

According to this new research, drug effectiveness, which in some cases reduces the number of seizures, is not contingent upon a patient's age. Consequently, data may help bring effective new drug treatments to pediatric epilepsy patients.
