American Academy of Pediatrics - Efforts to Extend CHIP

Dr. Yasser Awaad serves as a consultant for academic curriculum and program development in Michigan’s Beaumont Health System. In addition to his role there, longtime pediatrician Dr. Yasser Awaad maintains active membership with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

A network of more than 66,000 physicians, AAP members contribute to the wellbeing of children and young adults. The organization supports pediatricians and their patients alike through efforts in education, community programming, and legislative advocacy.

One of the AAP’s primary goals is helping children gain access to high-quality health care. It does so by supporting federal programs, including Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

In recent years, the AAP has played a large role in garnering congressional support for the CHIP program. This federally funded program finances health coverage for 8 million children who do not qualify for Medicaid coverage and do not have access to private insurance. The AAP’s advocacy efforts resulted in the 114th Congress deciding to extend CHIP funding through 2017. Efforts to secure a longer-term extension of the program are underway now.
