Dr. Yasser Awaad's profile

Urine Protein and Developing Dementia

With an extensive background in medical research and neurology, Dr. Yasser Awaad serves as a consultant at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, operating in an advisory capacity in the development of curriculum and other academic programs. In conjunction with his day-to-day work, Dr. Yasser Awaad maintains active membership with the American Academy of Neurology (AAN).

According to recent data published by the AAN, individuals with protein in their urine may be at greater risk for memory problems later in life, potentially even developing dementia.

Researchers examined a cross-section of data from various kidney-related studies over recent years and referenced those findings with the incidence of dementia in those patients. After examining 22 different studies and more than 27,800 patient records, the data indicated that individuals with protein in their urine showed a 35 percent higher risk of experiencing dementia or other thinking problems later in life than those without protein in their urine.

Researchers also studied other kidney functions to assess correlation to dementia, such as estimated glomerular filtration rate, but found no conclusive evidence of a relationship between the two.

Funded by the European Union’s Framework Program Seven, the In-MINDD (Innovative Midlife Intervention for Dementia Deterrence) project provided financial support for this research.
