As the calendar turns to a new year, the AMA encourages individuals to assess their overall health needs and make resolutions to become healthier in 2017. AMA President Andrew W. Gurman, MD, says that the following recommendations can help individuals start the year off right in terms of their health and wellness.

The AMA recommends that individuals set limits on how many sugary beverages they consume, as they contain empty calories and can contribute to weight gain. The AMA also recommends decreased consumption of sodium and processed foods.

Eliminating unhealthy habits, such as smoking, is an additional step people can take to become healthier. In terms of alcohol consumption, the AMA recommends moderation—up to one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men.

On the subject of sugar, the AMA also suggests that individuals assess their risk for developing type 2 diabetes by visiting DoIHavePrediabetes.org.

Adults between the ages of 18 and 65 are encouraged to undertake at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise at least five days per week.
