Street Furniture pt. 2

Industrial Design
Skateboarders, BMX riders, freerunners and inline skaters are probably the most intensive users of public space. They define their surroundings not by intended function but by possibilities. Form is just the starting point for own interpretations, so a park bench to sit on can become a playground in the minds of the people involved in these activities.

At Area Fifty One Skatepark, Europe's biggest indoor skateboard facility, I built an installation especially for Dutch Design Week 2009 in which I focus on these possibilities. The chosen form of a living room references directly to the idea of design, but has no relevance to skateboarding as it is an outdoor activity. It challenges the skateboarders to find new ways to make use of these items and by doing so they add purpose and worth.
