"Our Voices" CSAT Quilts
Quilts created by students inspired by Gees Bend Quilters
This quilt is one of three created by my 7th and 8th grade students in 2007 entitled "Our Voices I". It was on display at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival building during the month of February 2007 in celebration of the Gees Bend quilters who were from the very area of my students. It is now in the archive of the Alabama State Department of Education. Some of these famous ladies were aunts, grandmothers and cousins to these kids and with the help of one of the Gees Bend quilter descendants, this was one of many projects in my year long theme: "Wilcox Through the Eyes of the Children" and it helped the students to feel pride in where they lived. Gees Bend Quilters had a stamp and play dedicated to their memory at the ASF.
"Our Voices II" is on display at Auburn University's Humanities new building in appreciation to a collaborative effort with the university of support of Ms. Andrews' art program and activities.
Our Voices III was on display in the Black Belt Treasures shop/gallery for month of February in 2007 and later sent to be on display at Camden School of Arts and Technology where it should be still available for all to see.
