Within the dense, circuitous urban fabric of Tokyo, Japan, a new type of development typology has emerged: the mega block. As we address the needs of multiple generations and environmental sustainability, we aim to preserve the character of the site and pedestrian life. Sumida [micro] Blocks are a network of spatial and programatic connectors to mediate between the riverfront housing development and existing urban fabric. This network can morph, evolve, and grow over time so that elevated and carved greenways will ‘link’ a new public zone with a sense of community while inventing a new ‘mega block.'
