As a labor of love I always enjoyed all things historical. So it came natural to me that eventually I'd get around to finding out more about my family history. One thing that always caught my eye about my family history was the family crest. How cool it was to have a family crest that had a Knight on it I thought as a kid... well later in life I wanted to figure out more about this as I recently had a son in the past few months and I figure he should actually know more about where it is the Maguire family came from. And so to cut to the chase I discovered some wonderful historically interesting things about how the Maguire family and Maguire land played a major role in the 9 years war between the crown of England and Ireland in the late 1500's. What really intrigued me most was that I knew that Enniskillen played a central role in this and until recently I did not know why. Well basically Hugh Maguire, or Hugh Mag ud dir in non anglicised text was the lord in county Fermangh in what was once known as Maguire's Land. To make a long story short, he was successful at using Calvary ( Horseman ) to defeat the Royal crown in several battles including the Battle of Yellow Ford and Mullagbrack. Now interestingly enough after being a part of a leadership role in several battles, he uhe died of greivous wounds hours  after defeating Sir Warham St Leger. Who knows if this is all 100% accurate but its taken from several sources including wikipedia.org Just the same Hugh Maguire definitely did live and something close to this tale is accurate because the Maguire family clan bard told the tale according to wikipedia in something called The Annals of the Four Masters which was published in 1630.

"Maguire's bard, O'Hussey, composed a stark and chilling ode upon his patron's death.
The Annals of the Four Masters
(c. 1630) eulogised him:
"He was the bulwark of valour and prowess, the shield of protection and shelter, the tower of support and defence,
and the pillar of the hospitality and achievements of the Oirghialla and of almost all the Irish of his time"
