Galveston - Part 1 of 2
My assistant and I took a month long road trip from Chicago to Los Angeles beginning in late January, 2023 to continue on the mission to photograph the iconic university architecture in America. (Those images can be viewed HERE.) The first building on my list was the spectacular Ashbel Smith Building, also known as "Old Red," in Galveston, Texas (first image below). It's a Romanesque Revival design by architect Nicholas J. Clayton; built in 1891.

I had never been to Galveston before and was surprised to find that it's located on a barrier island, immediately South of Houston. The building is located on the University of Texas Medical Branch campus.

Galveston is a somewhat surreal landscape, whose architecture reminded me, loosely, of New Orleans; often colorful, but without that distinctive New Orleans vibe. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised to find an abundance of interesting and distinctive residential architecture to photograph.
