ABOUT THE PROJECT

“Great Expeditions. Polish Adventurers Across the Globe” (“Podróżnicy. Wielkie Wyprawy Polaków) is a book” in Polish edition) is a children book written by Andrzej Fedorowicz and designed and illustrated by Zosia Frankowska and Jacek Ambrożewski. Polish edition was published in 2019 by Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry. In the same year the book won the main graphic prize in the annual content “Book of the Year” organised by Polish Section of IBBY.
It contains seventeen stories of the famous Polish male adventurers, dating back from the middle ages to the modern times. As the publisher's blurb says:
Into the unknown and around the world. To the highest peaks and inaccessible poles. Across the endless oceans and deserted wastelands. For centuries, Poles have traveled across lands and seas, venturing into the farthest corners of our planet.
Here are the stories of famous Polish travelers and their amazing expeditions. The heroes of the book include exiles and pirates, researchers and adventurers, sportsmen and journalists. From the medieval monk Benedykt the Pole, through the legendary Maurycy Beniowski, Leonid Teliga, Tony Halik and Jerzy Kukuczka, to Marek Kamiński and Aleksander Doba.

MAKING OF – SKETCHES AND DRAWINGS

Each story was carefully resarched in terms of historical accuracy – we had to take into consideration the looks of main characters, types of clothing they wore, vehicles they used as well as many other details. After the research, we did lots of sketches to see how to tell each story visually using few spreads dedicated to each characters' journey.
Then we drew the final drawings – all of them were done completely by hand using 2B pencil and ordinary printer paper. Then they were scanned, coloured in Photoshop and edited into the final design.
Depicted travels were very diverse: from sweltering sand of African deserts, to the frozen wastelands of Antarctica. They had to be visually distinguished, which was achieved by applying a different colour palette to each story.
