A small but mighty photo festival in a remote island
Graphic Campaign, Print, Digital

The Department of Culture of Lanzarote, Canary Islands, commissioned us to create the graphic identity for Veintinueve Trece: Festival of Photography and Visual Arts of Lanzarote. The 2021 edition revolved around the concept of ‘periphery’, and framed its photography and visual arts programming within a greater inquiry into minorities and their histories of marginalization – all with the goal of pushing the boundaries and promoting a renewed understanding of creativity that isn’t beholden to the prevailing canon. Among the assignment’s primary goals were to generate a unique and recognizable identity, while broadening the scope of the festival beyond its borders to attract an increasingly international audience.

From a graphic standpoint the proposal steered clear of representating the concept literally, opting instead for a transgressive and rough typographic formalization. The design took cues from some of the visual stereotypes often seen on tabloids and news chyrons, thereby linking the analog and the digital to convey the concept of the festival in a contemporary, functional way. In terms of composition, the various ingredients (lineup, imagery, programming…) were juxtaposed in anarchic ways that helped reinforce their dynamism. Color was spared altogether to increase the contrast between elements, and to intensify the grimness in the festival’s graphic design.

Consequently, the project results in a memorable and consistent identity that highlights the work of the various participants without losing sight of the overall concept.
