Music and The Spatial Paradox

Thesis Project 2012-13

A reconsideration of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Location: 751 Erieside Ct.
                  Cleveland, OH
Concept:
Music creates a sense of spatiality in the realm of the imagination. It has a spatially dialectic condition, where on one hand it offers a spatial enclosure, one of internal isolation, protection and seclusion from ones surroundings. On the other hand, it is expansive, allowing a total freedom of the mind, projecting into a boundless space, able to transcend ones thought into a universe of the sublime. This spatial paradox embedded in music is the essential quality that creates the ecstatic in the listener. The reconsideration of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame attempts to address this coincidence of music's spatial qualities.

Enclosure vs. Expansive Spatail Conditions:
Musical Research:
Creating a musical score whilst listening to chosen pieces to develop a language and structure as the first step in design. The first set of drawings were created by mapping out each beat and rhythm within each piece, focusing on each and every stroke of the paint brush, whilst the second set represents the music as a whole playing repeatively and engulfing the listener completely.

The Increment vs. The Whole
Investigation of the increment vs. the whole in other forms: graffiti, museum exhibitions and art photography

 The Site

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame houses 276 currently inducted artists, increasing by 5-8 indivduals/groups each year. The building holds information and displays on each inducted artist for the expansion and knowledge of music and its history.

Using each inducted artist or group as the UNIT creating an entire center for spatial experimentation driven by organization and music.
The site is located on the water front of Lake Eeire, North of the Downtown Cleveland area. The topography of the waterfront condition offers a space lowered from the city's center, a contrasting element of visual connection from the main highways linking to the downtown area.

Music into Architectural Space:

Development and accumulation of the detailed increment (unit for the inducted artists) formulates into an overall pattern, shaping the landscape around it. The more access from one unit to the next creates more opportunity for the user to shape their own path through the space.
Studies of the unit possibilities and connections:

The unit unfolded incorporating information and music from the artist(s): photography, autographed pieces, film of performances, music and history.

Ex: Pink Floyd, Creedence Clearwater Revival & David Bowie
The Unit Accumlations

Plans:
Ground Floor: The landscape follows the language of the units, creating exterior performance and gathering spaces.

Fifth Floor and above incorporate large gathering spaces to create an opening from the continuous unit to unit pathway, aslo creating areas where one can hear multiple muscial pieces from surrounding units, triggering and guiding the user on where to go next.

Site Plan:
Connectivity around the Downtown Cleveland Area:

Proposing the unit /  increment to spread into the city and raise awareness of the history of Rock and Roll music by scattering public display cases  for pedestrain access.
Continuously growing every year, with new inducted artist incorporated into the architecture, the exterior waterfront offers spaces for music performance.
