Gustav the Gargoyle

Initial ideas and development for Gustav the Gargoyle.
These were early, quick ideas in my sketchbook for the Book of Ugly. When that fell through they sat dormant, locked within those pages for some time. It wasn't until a girlfriend, unable to sleep picked up that sketchbook and brought new life, she commented how much character and mischief they held.
Scribbles from my sketchbook.
My daughter, (then four) liked the character and produced her own wonderful, interpretation of Gustav. I felt I had to use this illustration somewhere in the book.
Idea for book jacket.
Front cover.
First page dedication.
Page two + three.

Double page opening where additional informative text was planned to be written. I wanted an exaggerated, colourful representation of a painterly, layered environment that had only some baring towards reality. Whimsical soft skies to get lost in with solid textured grounding.
Page four + five.

As above but now as night creeps in.
Page six and seven.

 Text not added.
Page eight + nine.
Page ten and eleven.

I'm alive!
Penultimate double page.
Back cover.
