Studio Desk
When I moved into a new apartment this summer, I was faced with the immensity of decorating a space tailored for not only me, but for my boyfriend as well. We designated the second bedroom, with its east-facing window and charming nooks, as the studio and office space. I was very conscious of creating a space that was welcoming to both of us. For me, that means a nuturing, inspiring, clean space where I can produce art. For my boyfriend, that means a comfortable, non-distracting zone where he can practice guitar and write. With that in mind, I set out to build a table where we could both work at.
Step one: build. Nothing complicated about this design!
Step two: color the trestles. I chose yellow, because I love having a pop of color in an otherwise neutral space.
Step three: weather the wood with a homemade oxiding stain. It turned the pine into a brassy brown.
Step four: decorate. I was initially hoping to burn designs into the wood top, but I realized that it would affect our ability to write and draw on the surface. Instead, I opted to paint designs on the wood in a walnut stain.
Step five: stain and finish with polyeurethane. All ready to be used!
(Just for fun: I splattered myself with wood stain, which ended up looking like late summer freckles!)
