Born and raised in Davao City, south of Philippine capital Manila. He studied filmmaking at the Mowelfund Film Institute in Manila under Filipino filmmakers Nick Deocampo, Cannes Winner Raymond Red; German cinematographer Tomas Mauch (Fitzcarraldo, Aguire), editor Helga Borsche and experimental filmmaker Christoph Janetzko.

Laranas partnered with Raymond Red – as co-cinematographer – to produce Bayani (Heroes) and with Nick Deocampo as director of photography for such acclaimed works as Ynang Bayan (Mother Country), Isaak, and Sex Warriors.

He pursued a career in advertising as director-cinematographer producing award winning spots for the local industry (clients include Procter & Gamble, McDonald’s, Nestlé, Caltex, among others).

He is the first ever-Filipino director to receive a grant from the National Geographic Channel to produce a documentary on the ill-fated ship the Doña Paz – the world’s worst peacetime maritime disaster. Read Less

Yam has directed and photographed six features to date - with Regal Entertainment’s The Echo (Sigaw) as the most celebrated.

The film won Best Cinematography and Visual Design, Editing, Sound, and Music for the Young Critics Circle of Manila; Editing, Sound and Score at the Metro Manila Film Festival; Supporting Actress at the URIAN Awards Manila; and Best Musical Score at the ScreamfestLA International Horror Film Festival.

The same film was officially selected at the Fantasporto Festival in Portugal and the Brussels International Festival of Fantastic Film (BIFFF) where it won the 7th Orbit Award (In the past, Belgian audiences were introduced to the first films of now established directors such as Takashi Miike, Christopher Nolan or Gaspar Noë. To valorize this section and promote the work of new directors towards the audience, the press and the distributors, BIFFF created the 7th Orbit Competition) – the second Asian and the first Filipino to ever win such major award in one of the biggest festivals in the Europe.
