Brittany Chretien (°1992, Lake Charles, LA, United States) is a photographer currently studying foreign languages and visual arts at McNeese State University, in Lake Charles, LA. Her work explores the relationships between light and dark, the obvious and obscure, and perpetual neurosis. Her images are primarily a visual diary of self-exploration of the human form and personal identity, which is constantly threaded with self-doubt and a constant will to overcome. With influences such as Renée Magritte, Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison, and Sylvia Plath, the moments depicted are an effort to capture poetic meaning in everyday life.

Her photos often distort visual shapes and forms, either through motion or physical obscuration. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes an enigma. By using abstraction, she tries to create works in which the actual event still has to take place or just has ended: moments evocative of atmosphere and suspense that are not part of a linear narrative in time or place.

Her works occasionally radiate a cold but disconcerting beauty. The
inherent visual seductiveness, along with the transience of the
images, further complicates the reception of their complex layers of meaning. By emphasizing these delicate aesthetics, she creates intense personal moments carefully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles.
