My name is Karine, I am a french book sculptor living between France and Luxembourg.
I am reading passionate, I love old books and I need to be creative with my hands.

Since 2012, through miniature and intricate 3D paper scenes, I try to give to second hand books another life and way of expression. For me, it's a way to offer the possibility of pursuing the journey, to excite the dream beyond the end of the story.

My sculptures are the concretization of my recognition and gratitude for the journeys I made during my readings, and the expression of my admiration for authors or incredible persons (my next sculpture will be on the passionate and passionating George Whitman). It is a chance to be able to thank beyond words and therefore, I try to return what I received, as high as it was given to me!
Of course, nothing would have sense if I did not share all this with the public because my sculptures are also messages I try to send ! Which are : « read books ! », « Look how incredible was this author, this man or this story ! »,« Books are full of treasures, do not abandon them in the solitude and the dust ! »... Here are my deepest motivations, I do not just try to make something aesthetic and poetic, and I'm very happy when people can recognize that in my work.

So, I find old books on flea markets and second hand bookstores. My inspiration always guides me. I can choose a book for its story, for the author, or choose to work on subjects and people a admire.

I read the book and only after, I try to represent the story, or an important scene, with its own pages. I don't use any other paper because I want to proove than books are rich by themselves and don't need anything else to reveal their treasures.

Everything is small, detailed (I love to give more realism !) and made by hand (no laser cut or punches). I don't reproduce twice the same sculpture (there is too much books to explore!) so each sculpture is a unique art piece.
Each one of them requires between 200 and 400 working hours to be complete.

I don't transform any 1st editions, precious books covers, or church books...

I sometimes add microLED lighting to emphasize details, increase realism or poetry.
I sometimes use thin wire to support the structure (in my trees for example), but I try to hide them to preserve the illusion of magic.

You will see that my favorite themes are Andersen's fairy tales, nature and humans feelings but my tastes constantly evolve.
Thanks for visiting and if you are curious about my technique, follow me on Facebook where I share works in progress
and news about exhibitions...
