My studio research focuses on the symbiotic relationship between clay and food - I use ceramics to create objects of sustainability. I am currently making ceramic hydroponics systems and vermicomposters, mostly, because I am fascinated with the aspects of the food production cycle that we don’t see. These are not as efficient as they will need to be in the coming generation.
This has led me toward historic agricultural practices and the trajectory of the modern food industry. Clay cradles cuisine as the food comes from soil, the two transform through cooking and kilning, and rejoin once again as meal supported by plate. In the sudden growth of the 21st century food industry, this relationship has been sidelined. I am interested in how art objects can fill in the gaps, and reintroduce this symbiosis in modernity.
