Jaap van den Beukel graduated from the academy of The Hague in 1989. For many years
he worked as photographer for advertising agencies. The last few years he had focused
on making free style work in which his advertising background is clearly visible. He calls
his own work “staged reportage”. He has a fascination for people, the street and social
issues and combines these with the control and perfection of the applied photography.
Over the last few years Van den Beukel has applied himself to film. He makes, short,
intimate portraits and works only with the, at that moment, available light. This can work
as a restraint but can also be liberating at the same time. This approach has also been of
influence on his photography, leaving more and more to chance. The structure is well
thought out but within the structure anything can happen. All kinds of situations which
he can’t take into account beforehand. A street scene isn’t thought out but is created on
