Gerhardt Coetzee (1983) was born in Pretoria (South Africa). Since early childhood a deep interest in line, form and atmosphere has developed to an investigation of life and lifeless matter through photography.
Speaking about his own work, he says:

"My work deals with the story behind what has been, what is in the present state and what has become of it and how the cycle will continuously perpetuate.”

Gerhardt studied and received his Photography BTech degree at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, in 2009, with Honors. During his studies he was awarded the NMMU merit award (for best Third year student in Visual arts), was invited to take part in the Absa LAtelier exhibition (for 2009 and 2010) and received a Honorable Mention in the International PIEA photographic
competition in 2008.

His work has also received two Sony Profoto, Gold Awards for his architectural series named "Open Spaces", vol.1 and was selected as an emerging creative at the Design Indaba Expo in 2009.

His "Open Spaces" Vol.2 has received two Sony Profoto, Silver Awards in 2010 and later in the year he received a merit award for the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition.

His work was also selected to become part of the Sasol New Signatures permanent collection.

A foray into fashion photography landed Gerhardt a place as one of the top ten finalists in the 2010 Elle New Talent competition, and he is currently a finalist in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum Biennial Awards. Read Less
