The Symbolism of H.G. Wells

Editorial
One of the 20th Century's most acclaimed authors, HG Wells is mostly known for his groundbreaking Sci-Fi writing, but he's also behind a collection of incredible social novels that transcend their time-frame and remains relevant even today.

The 2010 D&AD Student Awards challenged participants to design a stunning and contemporary set of book covers to establish these titles as timeless fiction aimed at young, literate creatives.

The goal of my contribution was to create something that would captivate and go a little beyond the "2D limitations" of usual book cover designs in order to give these classics the tribute they deserve.

The solution was a minimalistic approach based around the collective themes of the series by a set of symbols and colours - where each book highlights the relevant symbols for that particular story when placed inside its casing.

A practical detail was added in the form of an accompanying bookmark, incorporated as part of the book's title.
