Lord of the Rings Re-imagined

Lord of the Rings: re-imagined visual style
Personal experiment wherein I try to move away from the established cinematic visual style of Tolkien`s masterpiece by going back to the author`s original art.
PS. Peter Jackson did amazing work, but I do like to experiment!
Mixed media (inks, wash, markers watercolor, collage)
Here`s how I started work on the project:
Started with a bunch of composition thumbnails on tinted paper.
Tried some character compositions, wasn`t too happy about it.
Tolkien was a big fan of settings (especially nature) so I decided to stick to that.
Went back to landscapes, this time with a more abstract and graphic approach.
Hmm...too much black and white.
Back to colors, went for a muted, moodier style.
Okay, okay, but the landscaped are kinda empty?...
Added, characters, but only as silhouettes. The main 'hero' is the setting, remember.
Also added some dramatic contrasts. Maybe too dramatic?
You know what else Tolkien loved, besides settings (and linguistics)? Watercolors!
Impressive setting - check. Characters immersed within it - check.
Nature - check. Watercolors - check check check!
Ladies and gentlemen - we have a winner!
