I created this retro motorcycle, inspired by old screenprinted packaging and matchbooks. I used Clip Studio Paint on iPad for the most part, and finished off on the Mac. Working with the Apple Pencil on the iPad Pro and CSP on this piece was really a joy!
The 3 overlapping transparent colors were combined to build up the final illustration, much like in tradition screenprinting
The first thing I did was to create a pencil sketch based on reference images. From that, I created a value sketch, to get a better understanding how to break the image up into 3 color layers
From the sketch, I started drawing the 3 color layers. I did this all manually with rather rough brushes to get natural imperfections.
When the layers were combined I adjusted some details and tweaked the colors to fit well together.
In the end, I experimented a little with textures and adjustments, to get the warm analog feel I was going for.
