Beethoven Poster, Josef Müller-Brockmann, 1955
The Beethoven poster for the Tonhalle series is one of Müller-Brockmann's classics. The stark black and white and moving circle arcs hint at the drama of Beethoven's music.
From "Geometry of Design" by Kimberly Elam, Princeton Architectural Press
The movement of the arcs around the center of the circle is based on a module of 11.25º. This module defines the length of the arcs as 5 segments, 6 segments, 7 segments, etc.. The width of the arcs is based on a doubling principle as 1, 2,4, 8, 16.
