Broken into three volumes, “The Lost Writings” is a collection of poems, notebook entries and recitals written by Jim Morrison over his lifetime. This project is an attempt to redesign his books that reflect the fragmentation of his thoughts and provide an insight into his inner conflicts that led into the creation of some of the most influential lyrics in the music history.

In order to develop the design language for the book, I started to look deep into the personality of Jim Morrison. We remember Morrison for his larger than life persona, but he always wanted to be remembered as a poet fighting for freedom.

Um die Gestaltungssprache für das Buch zu entwickeln, beschäftigte ich mich intensiv mit der Persönlichkeit von Jim Morrison. Wir erinnern uns an Morrison vor allem aufgrund seiner Berühmtheit als Frontmann von “The Doors”, aber er selbst wollte immer als ein freiheitskämpfender Dichter in Erinnerung bleiben.

The color palette for the books is mostly reduced to black to reflect the dark undertones of his work. Black and white marbling patterns are used on the covers and the patterns are hidden in between the pages. The fine structured texture symbolizes both his rich, complex inner life as well as his fine perception of details. Ample use of the white space helps his poems to unfold.

I wanted to use a timeless Didone font and opted for the Scotch Modern and Scotch Micro. The character of the font reflects the sensitivity and strength which are definitive traits of Jim Morrison.
