I had never heard of "Guatemalan worry dolls," until a friend mentioned them to me last year, as she fretted about an important interview. "What do worry dolls look like?" I asked Patty, a Guatemalan friend, and soon after she approached me with a whole set of colorful, handmade tiny dolls that would 'take away my worries.' The idea was so enchanting that I immediately began to sketch out my own worry doll characters, for my antsy, stressed out friends, as well as my own state of mind.
