I co-conceptualised and co-authored Ki Sorti: Anoti Ngua, the first-ever graphic novel about Eurasian heritage, culture, and identity. This is the first of three volumes, and was produced via a grant from Yale-NUS College as part of The Future of Our Pasts Festival and the Singapore Bicentennial.
The title is written in Kristang, a Portuguese-Malay creole and the heritage language of the Portuguese Eurasians in Singapore and Malaysia. Varying degrees of English, Singlish, and Kristang are sported by characters throughout the book, along with bits of other Singaporean languages, reflecting the way every Singaporean has their own way of speaking.
Ki Sorti is our love letter to our community, and the immortalisation of its stories.
Synopsis:
Alex D'Almeida has always felt out of place. Attending the wake of a close relative, she ends up reconnecting with her estranged extended family - rediscovering a Eurasian community and culture she once lost. As she gets drawn into their stories, old tensions unwittingly surface. It may be just the tempering she needs to find herself again.
