Photo experiments with a pinhole camera in the context of a free theme photography course.
I built a pinhole camera using an empty can, and took real pictures with it.
It is fascinating to take pictures in this manner, because of the interesting produced effects, like the deformation of moving objects in the meanwhile of the long time exposition (between 1 and 4 minutes), the rounding of surfaces due to the shape of the can and the imperfections of the film.
On the pictures below one can observe another very curious effect of photographing with long exposure times: By doing so, all moving objects and subjects in the scene - like cars and passers-by - either vanish or become a blurry cloud, while static ones remain more recognizable. In both pictures, taken in very busy corners of Rio de Janeiro during peak times, the image suggests, nevertheless, "ghost" streets, free from cars and persons.
So, the picture displays another perspective of the reality. Yes, people and cars were captured and are part of the picture, but their hurry was poetically transformed by the exposure time and the "magic" of the pin hole process.

Other photo experiments in the context of the same free theme photography course, now with a merely one way camera without lens, just with a hole instead.
We called this camera "Cathilina" after the name of the photographer, who had the idea of building such a camera. The results look similar as the pin hole can camera, given that one still have control on the exposure times and the image is also slightly rounded, however Cathilina has more grain and saturated colours.
