The Spielzeug Museum (Toy Museum) in Salzburg invites young and old alike to the colourful world of playing. The primary focus is on experiencing and giving things a try. While the ground floor invites visitors to roll around, balance and be amazed, the first floor offers a varied world full of the most different toys to look at – many things are deliberately on children’s eye level – and to touch.
Under the title »Pippi Longstocking – Heroine in Stockings«, the special exhibition portrays the famous child heroine on the upper floor of the Spielzeugmuseum. Pippi’s animal companions »Little Old Man« and »Mr. Nilsson« show up, as does Pippi’s »Villa Villekulla«, the »Hoppetossa« ship and many more treasures of her world.
In order to convey the Pippi Longstocking atmosphere also in graphical terms, we chose a self-confident presentation of the natural yet playful typography, which leads through the exhibition along with Pippi’s illustrated companions. Each of these characters is individually printed on wood or forex boards and die-cut; in this way, they encounter the visitors in sculptural terms. On the one hand, a mix of different materials such as aluminium, wood, paper or adhesive film ensure a varied experience; on the other hand, inclined elements of the typography in use and of the presentations play with the unconventional world of Pippi Longstocking. Hay ho ho ha he ha ha!
