Three Hurdles Currently Facing the Trucking Industry

Three Hurdles Currently Facing the Trucking Industry
Seward Motor Freight has been operating in Seward, Nebraska, for over 50 years. It was incorporated in 1969 by Wayne and Joan Tanderup and since then, Seward Motor Freight has been offering safe and reliable trucking services to an ever expanding territory. Like many firms, it's facing some challenges that are confronting the industry as a whole.

1. Driver shortages are increasing despite growth in the median salary for truck drivers in recent years. Younger drivers aren’t entering the industry at the rate that older drivers are retiring.

2. An overall regulatory crunch on the industry has been tightening constraints. Things like electronic logging requirements, the added costs of stricter drug and alcohol testing, and service hours issues are taking their toll.

3. Inadequate parking facilities are of crucial concern to drivers. This problem is closely related to the challenge of more tightly restricted hours of service. Often drivers have to make a decision of whether to exceed HOS regulations while looking for a place to park, or to park in an unauthorized space in order to comply. Either way, they face a possible violation.
