Contemporary intervention into Venice Lagoon

2G Competition
Venice Lagoon Park

november 2007

The competition was intended as a reflection on the contemporary metropolis that, growing out of the design of the landscape, pays attention to the tension between global interests and local needs. The site chosen for the unfolding of the competition was the Venice Lagoon, the specific theme being the creation of the Venice Lagoon Park.

The park project had to be devoted to reclaiming the urban idea of the lagoon as a complex network of communications and settlements, through a hypothetical re-colonization of the territory of the lagoon, the decentralization and atomization of a program of uses, and the reclaiming of the idea of the lagoon as an urban constellation necessarily integrated in its natural environment. The program for planning this rehabilitation consisted of an Urban Park, situated on the territory of Sacca San Mattia island, which doesn’t have any particular usage nowadays, and Lagoon Prototypes - elements of urban furniture that facilitate new uses in the Venice Lagoon Park and a new way of reconnoitering and understanding it anew.

In my project it was offered to organize a system of Mirror Modules composed of basic elements such as: floating raft, mirror, refuge, storage, motor boat. One can fabricate his own module of any size and for any function, according to individual needs. With Mirror Module System it is possible to organize a floating beach, floating island for workshops, for concerts, for a private party. It is possible to transport the module by
motor-boat to any place in the Venice Lagoon. There are several overnight parking points, where one can connect his module to service lines. Owing to the fact that each module has a mirror, which is also a solar battery, floating islands do not spoil the panoramic view of the Lagoon, but multiply the admirable city of Venice.
