Pecans!
The Pecans! is a project, started by a group of students, in Greensboro, Alabama with lots of energy, an abundance of local pecans and the desire to create a new business. The idea came when students were challenged to come up with a business idea utilizing a local resource. The Pecans! gives the YouthBuild Hospitality students the ability to learn about vertical marketing, quality control, branding, inventory management and basic sales. All profits from Pecans! go to the YouthBuild scholarship fund, which awards three scholarships a year to those students who wish to obtain a post-secondary degree.
YouthBuild assits approximately 52 out of school youth per year work toward their GED, gain construction and hospitality skills, and participate in community service activities
MY POSITION
I served as the Production Manager of Pecans! When not busy making Butter or Brittle, I taught hospitality and other job skills to YouthBuild students pursuing their GED. My classes sought to incorporate vital skills students need to enter into the foodservice workforce, as well as foster students’ confidence and creativity.
In this position, I drew on my background in Nutrition and Dietetics, as well as my long-vested interest in public health and food security. My experience in tutoring, mentoring students and food service was also beneficial to my students' experience, as I developed quizzes, lesson plans and production goals to simulate their future potential career and higher learning settings. As an Alabama native, my passion for health, hospitality and investing in community led me to Greensboro where I continued to deepen my appreciation for Southern culture and the curious beauty surrounding it.
